The incidence of cancer in the Eastern Province is estimated at 70/100,000 population, and is one of the highest rate in Saudi Arabia. The Oncology Centre comprises of five Departments:
1. Adult Medical Oncology
2. Adult Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation
3. Pediatric Oncology
4. Radiation Oncology
5. Palliative Care

The Oncology Center is one of the signature programs at the KFSH-D.  The centre has collaborations with national centers like King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre and King Fahad Medical City both in Riyadh, in addition to international affiliations with the University of Buffalo, NY, USA, the Children Oncology Group of the United States and the International Society of Pediatric Oncology.

The hospitals received accreditation for fellowship training program in Hematology and one in Medical Oncology , which is suppose to start in early 2011. A cancer registry unit has been established, which produced its first report for years 2006-2008 including survival data.

Department of Adult Medical Oncology serves patients with a wide range of solid tumors and lymphomas. We have multidisciplinary tumor boards and clinics in collaboration with departments of Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Pathology and Radiology for different types of cancers. We offer treatment to patients according to the best evidence- based medicine using international clinical practice guidelines. We run twelve clinics per week and expanding.

The cancer center has chemotherapy treatment areas for male and female patients with both inpatient and outpatient services.

The Department of Adult Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation is responsible for the investigation and management of adults with a variety of hematological malignancies, mostly acute and chronic leukemias, aggressive lymphomas, myelodysplastic syndromes, multiple myeloma and several non-malignant hematological disorders such as aplastic anemia, hemoglobinopathies, hemophilia, etc. There is a set of practices and treatment guidelines that are available to manage patients with Acute Leukemia. Hospital facilities include a Hematology Unit of 14 beds and 4 outpatient clinics for follow up of patients with hematological malignancies & non-malignant hematological disorders.

The Pediatric Oncology Department provides services mainly for solid tumors in general, including brain tumors , malignant hematology and started to develop a bone marrow transplant service. We deliver the chemotherapy both as inpatients services and day care chemotherapy services. We are providing a multidisciplinary approach to all our patients. Our rate of admissions is increasing regularly. And we have ongoing programs to fulfill the criteria of highly specified care program and research and training in the Department, which is staffed by highly qualified clinicians.

The Radiation Oncology Department is a highly specialized and technology oriented specialty requiring a team of radiation oncologists, medical physicists, dosimetrists, nurses and trained nursing and technical staff. The Department provides support services to the oncology patients on both outpatient and inpatient basis. It also has the state of the art equipment including two linear accelerators, a remote afterloading High-Dose Rate Brachytherapy unit, CT-Simulator equipments, computerized treatment planning system, and a radiation oncology information system.

Requirements:

  • Medical Degree
  • American Boards or Canadian FRCPC in Oncology.
  • A minimum of ten years post-specialty certification experience working at a Director level in Oncology in a large North American acute-care teaching hospital.
